From 4 to 23 March, Cottesloe Beach plays host to the free open-air sculpture exhibition Sculpture by the Sea.

This exhibition, which began in 1997 at Sydney's Bondi Beach, is a unique event allowing the public to enjoy sculptures that incorporate the natural environment of the seaside as one of their elements. Over 60 works will be on display, selected from applications from both within Australia and overseas. From 2005 the exhibition has extended to Cottesloe Beach, where it has firmly established itself as one of Perth's main events, attracting roughly 100,000 visitors every year.

Artists from Japan have also been invited to exhibit their works. Among them is Keizo Ushio, Dean and Professor of Himeji Hinomoto College and internationally renowned sculptor, who has taken part every year since 1999, the third year of the exhibition. Ushio's geometric stone sculptures are acclaimed not only in the world of the arts, but also in that of mathematics. In 2006 he made headlines as the first ever artist invited to the International Congress of Mathematicians, held in Madrid, Spain. Last year, Ushio's piece Oushi Zokei: Moebius in Space was purchased by the City of Perth, which plans to install it as public art in the near future.

Other leading Japanese exponents of modern sculpture such as Kochi Ogino, Haruyuki Uchida and New York-based Zero Higashida will also exhibit their work. Don't miss this art event, with its many diverse and imaginative works of sculpture, free of any restriction on material or method of expression, looking out across the majestic backdrop of the Indian Ocean.
